Warning Signs Your Door Took Wind Damage

After a wind event, look for: a door that suddenly rattles or scrapes where it was quiet, visible daylight bowing at panel centers, a door sitting slightly crooked in the opening, rollers that have jumped partially out of track, or an opener that strains and reverses. Any of these means the system took load it didn't fully absorb — and the next event will find the weakness.

Five Defenses That Actually Work

1. Strut reinforcement. Steel struts bolted across the inside face stiffen wide doors dramatically — the single most effective upgrade for wind flex, and inexpensive.

2. Healthy rollers and tracks. Worn rollers are how gusts turn flex into derailment. Sealed nylon rollers seated in properly aligned tracks hold their path under load.

3. Correct spring balance. A balanced door sits firmly where it's put; an unbalanced one is already half-lifted against its hardware when the gust arrives.

4. Keep it closed during events. An open door during a Santa Ana event exposes the tracks, the opener and everything in the garage. Close it before the wind peaks.

5. Pre-season tune-up. Ten minutes of hardware tightening, lubrication and balance testing before wind season catches the marginal parts while they're still cheap.
